For the most part our manatee viewing was good.  They told us to come back when a cold front passes through because there can be as many as 300 in the area at one time!  We got to see some young ones but none of them were feeling very photogenic!  There were some that looked like they were playing peekaboo tag or some such thing!

The second picture is the hump of one of the manatee breaching.  The fourth picture is a shy little snout.  If you look at the last picture really close you can see three under the water.  There are three dark shapes if you stare at it long enough.

We learned some cool facts about the manatee while we were there.  They have what are called “marching molars.”  When a front tooth falls out the molars work their way forward and a new one emerges in the back.  Way cool.  And we got to compare the weight of a manatee rib bone to a cow’s rib.  The manatee’s rib is much heavier because their ribs act as balast to keep them down on the sea floor.  Pretty neat, huh?

Freedom’s price

This photograph was taken in 1918 and used 18,000 men. I thought it was very cool especially since Lullibell’s class has been learning about immigration, Ellis Island and the Statue of Liberty. I wonder how many of the 18,000 men in this picture survived the War.

By the way, at immigration day yesterday Lullibell made it through the immigration process with no chalk marks! She was very excited!

Silent Sunday

Check out VTHemi, at 30 doing what most of his 19-21 year old cheerleaders can’t do! Guess it was all those hay bales from the ground to the barn loft!

GO HOKIES!

Time for Momma and Bubba

Today will be my fifth and final Mother’s Tea at the preschool Bubba attends. I went to two with Lullibell and This year marks my third with the Bubba monster. Over the years we have had different themes… flowers… hats…flower garden…mommy love…and this year our theme is around the world.

Bubba has been singing songs for this in the back of the van for weeks…It’s a small world…I’m a Yankee Doodle Dandy…Mary had a Little Lamb (in Japanese!)…something in Spanish that I can’t quite put my finger on…I am SO excited to hear the whole production that I just can’t wait!

But I am also a little bit sad about it being the last one. Heck, I can’t even believe it is my fifth one let alone the last one. I can’t get past the fact that my kids are not babies anymore. Where did the time go?!?

So in honor of the tea today I am posting some of my pictures from last year. Very sweet little people singing Skinamarinkadinkadink…I love that song!

Pretty sparklies that my friend Nancy made. She even hand beaded the necklace part!

Happy Earth Day!!!

Denver’s Downtown Aquarium

Yesterday we dropped Hubby monster off at DIA. This totally sucked. So after passing the gigantic electric blue statue of a bronco twice and yelling “Look at the horse, Bubba!!!” The monsters and I headed off in search of the Downtown Aquarium.

Shouldn’t have been too hard to find because it is right off of I-25, right? Well, if one makes the 211 exit then it is very easy to get to but if one doesn’t get over in time one ends up driving in circles with 2 very unhappy monsters in the back seat.

But we did finally make it and had a huge amount of fun looking at all of the fish and other surprise animals that they house there. I did make a very cool discovery though…my cell phone takes better pictures through the glass than my digital camera does! Anyway, check out the pictures I was able to send myself!

Nice of it to pose so well for me!

0326081349_opt.jpg

This beauty did an awful lot of posing for over an our, swimming and sticking and swimming and sticking!

She prefers free climbing but for $2.50 momma couldn’t complain!

This is how Bubba spent his $2.50. It is at least wearable art!

I swear I thought I heard it say cheese!

Can we take it home, Momma? Please?

And now introducing….

This beauty is the pride of the aquarium. They run a constant feed of news footage of the tiger swimming in the same tank as the rain forest fish!

Content on the back of a giant sturgeon at the end of the day!

Hubby monster made a safe return to Tampa with only a bit of fuss at the airport.  Apparently some woman got and tried to get on he plane but the flight crew deemed her a risk so she was asked to deplane before the flight!

On our way home from Denver we got hung up in some pretty serious traffic. All of south bound I 25 was closed due to a head on collision. I had about 8 miles to find an alternate route so I was able to avoid the closure but it was still enough to make me sweat a bit. Can someone answer the question that 2 people asked me? How do you drive far enough going the wrong way on the interstate and gain enough speed to cause such an awful accident?!?!

A new spectacle and a review

So the potential panned out that Lullibell is slightly nearsighted in her right eye and a bit more nearsighted in her left eye! After much ado and many choices we had her favorite frames narrowed down to three…a lovely purple Hannah Montana pair, a pair of blue Sponge Bob with glow in the dark bubbles on the ear pieces, and a silver and pink pair with Cosmo and Wanda from the Fairly Odd Parents. She ended up choosing the Fairly Odd Parents ones. I think she looks terribly sweet in them. Hubby Monster is hoping the old adage boys don’t make passes at girls who wear glasses comes true!!!

She also had to have her eyes dilated. I think she might believe that this is the closest to torture that she will ever come! It is now 5:00pm and her eyes are still totally dilated!

After all the fuss and run that we did this morning we went to see Horton Hears a Who this afternoon. I thought it was delightful. There were great teaching moments like “a person’s a person no matter how small.” And there were loads of silly moments like when one character says in her world everyone is a pony and they all eat rainbows and poop butterflies! Aaahhh, if it were only that simple!

Steve Carrell and Jim Carrey were funny but Carol Burnett was awesome as the nasty, overbearing, pouch schooling, know-it-all, purple kangaroo. Lullibell gave it 2 thumbs up. Bubba gave it 2 thumbs up. Hubby monster gave it 1 and 3/4 thumbs up (this is because he never gives anything a perfect score).

The closing scene where the characters all sing a power ballad from the 80s stole the show. It brought back memories of big hair and mullets!
